meet haven

There’s a new addition to the nest!

… and, mercifully, it’s not a baby. Not a human one, at any rate.

Say hello to Haven! After much discussion, Andy and I adopted her last week from a local rescue organization. She’s a Russian Blue mix, which means she is not only a sweetheart, but she’s also (somewhat) hypoallergenic! Good news for an allergy sufferer like myself.

thursday things

1. Is this my first Thursday Things in a month? Yes, I believe it is. I have a surprisingly small amount to report, even though on my end it feels like a lot of things are going on. I guess I’m still waiting to see how those things end up panning out!

First off, I’m sure you’ll all be pleased to know I’ve been eating pretty well, at least over the past week or so.

It’s not until I compile all these pictures that I realize how many greens I’ve consumed. Good job, self!

This is mainly on account of our CSA box FINALLY arriving last week. After much drama surrounding our impossible front gate and the delivery man’s inability to get past the finicky latch, we at last received our box and are still steadily munching on it. I can neither confirm nor deny that I ate our entire head of broccoli in one day.

2. My Irlen glasses finally came! They are a very tasteful shade of lavender and I am absolutely in love with them. It took me a few days to get the hang of wearing glasses, but they make me feel so much better that now I can’t imagine being without them.

3. In case you haven’t seen it already, I started up a new Tumblr devoted to Mel, her cuteness, and gratuitous pictures of said cuteness. That’s right, every obsessive Instagram I’ve ever taken of Mel can now be found at gratuitouspicturesofmel.tumblr.com with daily updates. Go gaze upon the cuteness — you owe it to yourself!

4. As of today, I’ve been vegan for 3 months, wheat-free for almost 10 weeks, and soy-free for 9. And, somehow, it has indeed gotten gradually less torturous as I’ve gone along. Although I still have nightmares about eating the wrong things, like a bacon-wrapped chicken breast on a bed of breaded mozzarella sticks.

No joke. Actual dream.

sun butter banana shake

Okay, go ahead. Give me the award for worst blogger of the century. I accept it with no illusions.

At this point, I feel no need to defend myself. Sometimes life just gets crazy. Job opportunities come and go. Hopes spring up and are dashed. Physical, mental, and emotional health fluctuate. Crises of identity are had. New life paths are charted and blazed. And sometimes, well… sometimes it all manifests in the form of a month-long recipe hiatus.

Fortunately, I’ve got myself convinced that this is a perfectly valid response.

vegan mofo day 22: in which I’ve fallen off the wagon…

… gone over an embankment, down a hill, into a volcano.

Okay, so for those of you wondering if I still have a pulse, the answer is a resounding YES. I don’t have much of an excuse for my recent lapse in posts other than the fact that I haven’t been feeling very well, and the antibiotics I’m on have quite effectively killed my appetite. I’m sure I gave you all quite a shock when I welched on my first ever Thursday Things — rest assured, I’m doing my best to get back on the blogging horse and make some delicious delectables for you despite my current lack of any desire whatsoever for food.

In the meantime, I give you this little gem to tide you over until I’m back on my feet. Andy took out a Fastec camera this weekend and got some high-speed footage of Mel doing her puppy thing.

Better than any recipe, right?

allergy-friendly pesto

I remember the first time I tried pesto. I distinctly recall looking at it and thinking, “Why would anyone voluntarily put this substance in their mouth?”

Then I ate it, and my life was forever changed.

Suddenly, I was eating pesto on everything. Pesto pasta. Pesto lasagne. Pesto pizza. Pesto bagels.  Pesto pizza bagels. I was putting pesto on things I probably had no place putting pesto on. It was out of control.

Then I went vegan, realized pesto contained cheese, and abruptly resigned myself to a pesto-less life, figuring making your own pesto must be SO HARD. Lies. Pesto is probably the easiest sauce to make of all time. If you have a food processor and a pulse, you can make pesto. And since this vegan, nut-free variety contains no allergens that I’m currently aware of, you now have NO EXCUSE to deprive yourself of this sweet ambrosia among pasta sauces.
