thursday things

1. I got a care package from my parentals! I think they’re totally missing the whole trying-to-eat-healthier thing I’ve got going on here, because they always send me pounds and pounds of candy from Fresh Market. I make Andy hide it from me.

Seriously, she hides it. I have no idea where the candy is right now.

My parents also sent me makeup samples and the manuals for all my electronics, because they know me.

2. I can’t stop watching this video. I’m pretty sure it will never not be hilarious. Is something wrong with me?

3. Who else watched the Korra finale this weekend? AUGHHHH! Next season please! Though, for what it’s worth, I totally called the ending…

4. Guess who ran their first-ever mile this week!

Okay, if it sounds pathetic, there’s something you should understand. I am not athletic AT ALL. I am what they call in academic circles a “non-responder” — i.e, when it comes to physical fitness, I improve at a GLACIAL rate, if at all. Because of this, I always hated sports/exercise and have consequently been out of shape for pretty much my entire life.

When Andy and I moved to Sun Valley, I decided it was time to make a change and start at least trying to get fit (plus I was baking a lot and didn’t want to have to buy new clothes) so I got some shoes and started running. Sort of. Mostly walking. And after over a month of huffing and puffing and flopping down the sidewalk as my shorts ride up, I finally built up the endurance to run a whole mile without stopping!

I was one of those kids who walked the entire mile for the presidential fitness test, so the fact that I’ve hit this milestone is a BIG DEAL. Plus I promised myself I would reward my first mile by getting a real running shirt (i.e. not a t-shirt) so yay!

PS the bloody shoe is from a different run, but I was impressed that it happened anyway. It means my core is hard.

5. Andy’s new ring came!

Story time: Andy used to have a sterling silver claddagh ring that I got for her a while back, but it was pretty small and flimsy so it’s no surprise that she broke it a few weeks ago while horsing around at work (also managed to slice open her finger). She had been wanting a titanium ring for a while and so I figured the timing was right. As it turned out, the place we ordered her new ring from was having a sale that ended the next day, so we got a really good deal on it.

It took forever to get here, but we’re both really pleased with it and are definitely planning on ordering her “real” ring from there someday!

6. I’ve been watching Bunheads on Hulu and I still can’t decide what I think of it. Amy Sherman-Palladino has such a distinctive writing voice that it’s hard to watch without immediately thinking Gilmore Girls (especially since Kelly Bishop is essentially playing the same passive-aggressive character). I’m willing to give it a season to decide if I like it. I certainly don’t hate it.

7. Thanks so much to everyone who voted for Jackson to be the Young & Free Indiana spokester! Great news — he’s a finalist! Each of the 10 finalists have to do a second video and blog post, and the winner will be named on July 9th.

8. Along that same vein of badgering you to help out my friends, check out this video by my high school friend Thomas. He’s working to become a missionary documentarian and needs some help funding one of his trips. Watch the video, and it’ll tell you how to make a quick and easy donation online. Even if you can only give a few bucks, it would be a big help!

9. While I’m on a roll… my friend Abe is a really talented musician and is trying to get on Good Morning America. Listen to some of his music to become convinced that he deserves this big break, then go like him on Facebook to help him reach his goal!

10. Probably the biggest news of all — I worked my first background gig Tuesday! I got to spend the entire morning (no, really, the ENTIRE morning, like 4am on) walking around Disney’s California Adventure park. I hadn’t been there since I was a sophomore, so it was a bit nostalgic. I really enjoyed hanging out with my fellow extras, who were pretty cool people. I also had a great time just being on a set again and feeling the energy. It was invigorating and exhausting at the same time. I only hope all my shoots will be this much fun!

nectarine agua fresca

Andy and I have recently discovered the joys of Vallarta.

Not to rub it in your face, but if you don’t live in SoCal, you probably have no clue what a Vallarta is. (okay, I’m sort of rubbing it in your face)

Vallarta is one of many hispanic grocery chains out here — and when I say hispanic, I mean REALLY hispanic. As in, if you don’t know your Spanish numbers, you’ll be completely lost when they call you at the meat counter. I’m fortunate enough to have 4.5 years of high school and college Spanish under my belt, but poor, dyslexic Andy is lucky to even speak passable English most days. I’m sure she was grateful to have me along to read food labels, interpret intercom announcements, and translate warning signs.

Seriously, shouldn’t those things have English at least somewhere on them?

angel food cake quasi-unfail!

No recipe today, but I did want to share one of my weekend adventures. See, we somehow ended up with 3 cartons of strawberries after our most recent grocery trip. In an attempt to use up all of said strawberries before they spoiled, Andy suggested I learn to make one of her favorite strawberry vessels, angel food cake.

Well, here’s a quick recap of how it went down. Light on the words, heavy on the pictures. Sound like a good deal?

I thought so.

butterscotch blondies

Lately I’ve been feeling a bit discouraged. Despondent. Down in the mouth.

Shall I count the reasons? Well, I’ve yet to receive a single call from my call-in agency, which means no coin for me. Neither am I meeting any of my exercise and fitness goals — in fact, I’ve barely seen any improvement at all in the month+ since I’ve started running. In short, it would seem that all my lofty ambitions have simultaneously stalled out this week, leaving me at once penniless and muscle-less.

I also have a hangnail.

But let’s look on the bright side for a bit. Some of my considerably less lofty pursuits have been met with qualified success. In the past week I’ve mailed and received packages, gotten an unexpected surge of personal writing done, tidied up the apartment somewhat, and made a pan of kickass blondies to share with y’ins.

Yes, y’ins.

thursday things

1. Remember last week when I badgered you to vote for my friend Jackson as the Young & Free Indiana 2012 spokester? Well, voting is open until June 25, so if you haven’t cast your vote yet, now’s your chance! Watch his application video here, then go vote!

2. We went back to Ikea this past weekend to pick up a few odds & ends for the apartment… and ended up coming out with a bookshelf, desk, desk chair, vase, wood stain, and springform pan. Apparently the Swedes really know how to market to me. I also got a free frozen yogurt from the bistro for signing up for their rewards card. And we all know how I feel about frozen yogurt…

3. Andy and I have discovered The Yard on Hulu. It is pretty much the most hysterical show ever. I want to go adopt a Canadian child now.

4. For movie night at the guys’ apartment, I made some red velvet cheesecake brownies, except they contain no chocolate so there’s really nothing brown about them…

It turned out to be a fitting choice of snack, since we ended up watching Drive (red velvet… red blood… bloodiness… violence… get it?). I only caught about 50% of it since my eyes were hidden the rest of the time.

See, let me tell you something about myself (since I clearly don’t do enough of that already). I have very strong reactions to TV and movies. I tend to respond to images on the screen as if they were actually right in front of me. This is why I cry during childbirth scenes, cover my eyes during sexy scenes, and have a panic attack during violent scenes. CAN’T HANDLE THE FEELS. So the majority of my movie collection is either animated, a musical, rated PG or below, or all of the above.

The upside is that, after realizing I was not exaggerating about my delicate constitution, the guys all but guaranteed me something lighthearted and tame for next movie night. Score!

5. Andy and I now have a GPS! I just about had a breakdown Friday evening and demanded that we get one, so on Saturday we went to the closest Best Buy that had the model we wanted in stock (which happened to be over in Northridge). Then we proceeded to get a different model. Ha…

6. The weather here has been freaking out. Over the weekend, it was in the 80′s and our apartment was absolutely sweltering. The chocolate bar I had gotten as a father’s day present for, well, my father, turned to liquid. I tossed it in the fridge in a vain hope that it would spring back to its regular shape. Our coconut oil and peanut butter were also all but completely liquefied. At least my chapstick survived…

7. I get to go by the post office today, probably twice, to pick up a package from my parents and mail them one in return. The postman tried to deliver it yesterday, but I just barely missed him. Like, I literally watched him getting back in the mail truck with my package in his hands. Le sigh.

8. I went to Central Casting on Monday (thanks to my GPS) and got to stand outside in the blazing sun for 45 minutes, then sit inside for 2 hours, then stand inside for 2 more hours as I waited in line to get my picture made. I was the 4th or 5th person to last in line, so I got very familiar with the people next to me. For what was supposed to be a 3-hour orientation session, I left my apartment at 1:30 and got back around 6:30. First time Andy ever beat me home.

9. Lastly, I think you all need to go watch this. That is all.
